Save A Life Campaign was looking to revamp their existing Wordpress website to be easier to view, navigate, and edit.

My thought was to focus on the stories, both written and videos that had been submitted. It’s also easier to view announcement items and read about the campaign. The site features a rotating header image that links to a story, and a carousel of written story examples.

The concept behind the design is jotting down notes.

The Novice Driver's Road Map is a guide for parents to use on practice drives with their teens.

The Novice Driver’s Road Map is produced by NETS (Network of Employers for Traffic Safety) as a guide to help parents on practice drives with their teens, as part of the process to get a driver’s license. It has detailed information about each of the 8 drives, checklists, and includes a Coach’s Game Book outlining how to approach these drives.

Using the previous format of spiral-bound staggered width pages and a folder to include the Coach’s Game Book, I developed a new grid and typography system to make it easier to scan, read, and use on the road. For the cover, we wanted a look that meant driving without being cliche or showing nervous teens behind the wheel. The numbers represent each of the 8 drives inside.

I also designed the poster that highlights the benefits of using the Novice Driver’s Road Map.

Logo for Shop our Town.net, a cool site for local town shopping. The goal was a logo that conveyed shopping and the feel of a small town, so the bag shape is based off town signs seen in this part of New England.

Every year, I get to work with a great group of people on Drive Safely Work Week, through my association with NETS (see trafficsafety.org). The campaign is for companies concerned with employee driving, whether a fleet or commuters, to encourage safe driving habits. One week in October every year is set aside as Drive Safely Work Week with different activities for each day.

A very talented writer brainstorms the theme, then the two of us come up with the basic visual approach, and we both work closely with our NETS client in making sure everything meets NETS standards. But this post isn’t about the campaign — it’s about who’s blogged about the campaign.

For the past two years, these smart people have gotten a most logical partner signed on for the campaign — the U.S. Department of Transportation. Ray LaHood, the US Secretary of Transportation, has a blog called Fast Lane that features the campaign each year. I just noticed it this year, and am so excited to see my work is noticed and blogged about — in the government, no less!

Here is the link to the Fast Lane notice for the 2011 campaign: Focus 360°: Getting There Safely is Everyone’s Business (fun note: a former student provided the cartoon for the activity LaHood mentions as his favorite!)

Since I’m [almost] famous, this link is to the blog post on the 2010 campaign: Focus: Safe Driving is Serious Business

And, my first year working on this campaign wasn’t sponsored by the DOT but did get a shout-out: Drive socused. Drive smart. Get home safely.

“What nobody tells people who are beginners... is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap."

“What nobody tells people who are beginners — and I really wish someone had told this to me — is that all of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, and it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase. They quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.”

Trade show booth design leads to increased exposure for Plex in Germany.

Plex is a multi-national company based in Auburn Hills, Michigan. I had just finished up a document with recommendations for trade show booth graphic and layout approaches when this show in Germany came up. A booth design company in Germany came up with the specific booth layout and elements, which was really interesting because a huge booth wall like this and a refreshment station aren’t something common here in the States.

This booth wall design came directly out of my recommendations for a single thought, with interesting, simple graphics. Because Plex uses a variety of stock photos it is important to showcase these images in a unique way.

The site image was sent from the German coordinator, who pronounced the booth a complete success.

Zmierski Photo is the small business of a wonderful woman in my town. She’s very creative and has a great eye, but the typography of the old look was giving her problems.

By having both a symbol and text, the logo has a lot more possibilities. One thing photographers regularly do is watermark images on proofs. Doing this with a symbol keeps the legibility of her name intact. Plus, the Z can be filled with patterns, colors, whatever fits a particular application.

The negative space with the circle Z was a lot of fun!
